Special requirements for all courses
Health Requirements:
Prior to commencing all students are required to have established their infectious or immune status regarding certain viruses, including Hepatitis B and C and HIV. Acceptance of the offer of a place in either the Bachelor of Dental Science or the Bachelor of Oral Health indicates acceptance of this requirement.
Students should note that exposure-prone procedures are an integral and compulsory part of the course. A student who is positive for certain viruses and is held not able to perform such procedures will not be able to complete the course. First Aid Requirement:
All commencing students must obtain an appropriate First Aid Certificate within the first 4 weeks of Semester 1. Acceptable First Aid certification is:
- St John Ambulance First Aid (Level Two)
- Royal Life Saving Senior First Aid
- Metropolitan Ambulance Service First Aid (Level Two)
- Australian Red Cross First Aid (Level Two)
- Australian First Aid (Level Two).
Police Record Checks:
Clinical placements are part of the undergraduate courses and are undertaken at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, other metropolitan hospitals and metropolitan and rural community clinics. Most hospitals and clinical agencies require Police Record Checks for all students, staff and volunteers who will come into contact with children, elderly and vulnerable people.
All commencing students, both local and international, are required to obtain a police check at their own expense prior to enrolment. International students and students who studied outside Australia (including New Zealand) in the year prior to enrolment must obtain a police record check from the country in which they spent that year.
All continuing students must obtain a new police record check annually.

Working with Children Checks:
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Working with Children Check Policy
All students new to the School of Dental Science in 2008 are required to obtain a Working with Children Check on or shortly after enrolment. Students currently in the School of Dental Science in 2008 will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check before 30 June 2008. The School will provide current students with information on the process for completing this requirement during first semester 2008. Working with Children checks are valid for 5 Years. Students whose course extends beyond 5 years will be required to obtain a new check.
