ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND SELECTION

SCHOOL LEAVERS

(a) Pre-requisite Subjects and Other Requirements

VCE
International Baccalaureate (IB)
Interstate and New Zealand
Satisfactory completion of the VCE with an ENTER score of 96.00** or above and a study score of at least 35 in VCE units 3 and 4 in each of English (any) and Chemistry and one of Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics or Physics. Subjects must include English and Chemistry, and one of Mathematics or Physics. Standard Level prerequisites must be passed to at least grade 6 and Higher level prerequisites must be passed to at least grade 5. Applicants must achieve an overall IB score equivalent to the ENTER standard required for entry to the BDSc course. Students completing the final year of secondary schooling in an Australian State or Territory other than Victoria, or New Zealand citizens completing the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 3) will need to have met the same prerequisites (including English) and the same academic standard as VCE students.

** ENTER scores lower than 96.00 may be considered for candidates applying under Access Melbourne. For details on eligibility for Access Melbourne, refer to: http://www.access.unimelb.edu.au.

All applicants who are Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents, are required to undertake the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) to be eligible for selection. Applicants without a UMAT score will not be considered for entry to the course. No specific preparation or knowledge is required to undertake the test. UMAT application forms and information booklets containing more detailed information may be obtained from mid-April from the UMAT Office at ACER. For further details, please refer to the UMAT website http://umat.acer.edu.au/.

(b) Selection

Selection is based on a combination of the applicants’ ENTER, performance in the UMAT and performance in prerequisite subjects.

There is no interview.

It is a three-stream (UMAT, ENTER and ENTER/UMAT) process. Offers are made from a ranked listing for each stream, commencing from the highest ranked person on each list until all streams have generated the required number of offers.

UMAT stream—25 per cent (approximately) of offers to applicants with the highest weighted UMAT scores and an ENTER OF 96 OR HIGHER.

ENTER stream—25 per cent (approximately) of offers to applicants with the highest ENTER scores and a weighted UMAT above the 20th percentile.

ENTER/UMAT stream—50 per cent (approximately) of offers to applicants based on a combination of the ENTER and weighted UMAT ranks, with the ENTER rank given double weighting.

Calculation of 20th percentile: The University calculates a weighted UMAT score by giving a double weighting to Book 1 and single weightings to Books 2 and 3. The results are then ranked in numerical order of this overall weighted UMAT. The 20th percentile is then calculated from the bottom of this ranked list.

The Faculty reserves the right to take into consideration any advantage received by attending for more years than are usual in the senior years of secondary school before (or since) qualifying for the VCE or its equivalent.
