PhD (DENTAL SCIENCE)
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the major research degree offered by the University of Melbourne. The School of Dental Science has a vibrant cohort of PhD students undertaking challenging and rewarding research in each of the School’s five sections. Many of these students are undertaking research projects as part of the School’s role in the Co-operative Research Centre for Oral Health Science (CRCOHS).
Current CRCOHS research programmes are:
- Programme One: Oral Health Informatics
- Programme Two: Novel Diagnostics, Vaccines and Pharmaceuticals
- Programme Three: Nutraceutical Development
- Programme Four: Advanced Materials and Technologies
- Programme Five: Product Development and Clinical Trials
The CRCOHS is an expanding and exciting research organisation that provides many opportunities for developing your skills and talents as a research scientist in the rapidly advancing field of oral health science. Further information about the CRCOHS is available at http://www.crcoralhealthscience.org.au/.
In addition to the CRCOHS research programmes, other projects are conducted in the sections of the School that are funded through various grant organisations such as the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The five sections of the School are:

PhD CANDIDATURE
You may commence the PhD at any time of year although most candidates choose the beginning of the calendar year when numerous orientation sessions are provided by the School of Dental Science and the School of Graduate Studies.
The School of Graduate Studies is responsible for the administration of all PhDs across the University.
The PhD degree is typically by thesis only so no formal coursework is prescribed. However, you may include some coursework with agreement from your supervisors. You will work with at least two research supervisors who, in consultation, develop a plan of supervised research designed to suit your requirements and interests. A full description of the requirements for the degree, including the prescribed time limits and conditions of conducting the research project, is contained in the PhD Handbook http://www.gradstudies.unimelb.edu.au/phd/enrolcandid/.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for scholarships from the National Health and Medical Research Council; other sources of funding may also be available through the CRCOHS and project grants.
International students should enquire whether they are eligible for AusAID or other scholarships through the Melbourne Scholarships Office http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/scholarships/pgrad/.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
For information about the English language requirements for this course, please refer to http://www.futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/courses/pgenglishreq.html.
DURATION
This is a three-year full-time course with options to extend a further 12 months with the approval of your supervisors and the School of Graduate Studies. Part-time arrangements are also available with the approval of your supervisors and the School of Graduate Studies.
COURSE STRUCTURE
You enrol in the single full-time continuous subject 511-701 PhD Dental Science.
ASSESSMENT
The PhD degree is awarded for a thesis based on substantial original research. The thesis constitutes a deeper and more comprehensive treatment of its subject than a Masters thesis; it demonstrates that a research "apprenticeship" is complete, and that you are admitted to the community of scholars in the discipline.
You will be assessed by the examination of your thesis by external examiners who have acknowledged international reputations and relevant expertise in the subject or subjects of the thesis. It is expected that some of the work will have already been published or is in preparation for publication.
FEES
Local
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens are awarded a Research Training Scheme place sponsored by the Commonwealth Government of Australia. There is no tuition fee charged for these students.
International
International students pay tuition fees. Further information is available at
http://www.futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/int/ipg/ipgapply.html.
