COURSE GUIDE (PDF 493 kb)
BDSc WITH HONOURS
In 2006, the Melbourne Dental School reviewed the process for awarding the degree of Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours. The method of determining the awarding of this degree will be based on results over the second, third, fourth and fifth years of the course. Students who have undertaken supplementary assessment and students who have repeated a year/s are ineligible for the BDSc with Honours. Students who receive credit for subjects completed at other tertiary institutions are also usually ineligible.
The BDSc Hons mark is the average of:
- the weighted average of all final results for 2nd year subjects, plus
- the weighted average of all final results for 3rd year subjects, plus
- the final results of the 4th year subject, plus
- the final results of the 5th year subject.
The weighted average is calculated by multiplying the mark received for each subject against that subject's weighting and then adding the result of each multiplication. For example, if a 2nd year student received 65% for Oral Health Sciences 2A (which is a 37.5 point subject), 70% for Oral Health Sciences 2B (which is a 12.5 point subject) and 72% for Dental Practice 2 (which is a 50 point subject), that student's weighted average for 2nd year would be calculated as follows: 0.375x65 plus 0.125x70 plus 0.5x72 which equals 69%.
SUBJECT CREDIT
Enrolled students with other tertiary studies may be considered for credit exemptions for subjects in the Bachelor of Dental Science or the Bachelor of Oral Health. To qualify for such exemptions the subject(s) and course(s) undertaken must be considered equivalent in content, method of instruction and assessment to those for which credit is being sought and a high academic performance attained. Both the Bachelor of Dental Science and the Bachelor of Oral Health are highly integrated courses and previous studies may not be directly comparable. Therefore, in some instances, credit may not be granted for the whole subject but for components of a subject only.

OTHER INFORMATION
Police Record Checks:
Clinical placements are part of the undergraduate courses and are undertaken at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, other metropolitan hospitals and metropolitan and rural community clinics. Most hospitals and clinical agencies require Police Record Checks for all students, staff and volunteers who will come into contact with children, elderly and vulnerable people.
All commencing students, both local and international, are required to obtain a police check at their own expense prior to enrolment. International students and students who studied outside Australia (including New Zealand) in the year prior to enrolment must obtain a police record check from the country in which they spent that year.
All continuing students must obtain a new police record check annually.
Please read the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences policy and procedures for Police Record Checks. The policy and procedures document including a Student Consent and Release form as well as a National Police Record Check application form can be downloaded as a PDF document: Policy and Procedures for Police Record Checks (PDF 2.4 MB)
Further information on National Police Record Checks can be obtained from http://www.police.vic.gov.au.
Working with Children Checks:
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Working with Children Check Policy
All students new to the Melbourne Dental School in 2008 are required to obtain a Working with Children Check on or shortly after enrolment. Students currently in the Melbourne Dental School in 2008 will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check before 30 June 2008. The School will provide current students with information on the process for completing this requirement during first semester 2008. Working with Children checks are valid for 5 Years. Students whose course extends beyond 5 years will be required to obtain a new check.
Applying for a Working with Children Check, see the sample application and information sheet (PDF 1 MB).
First Aid:
All commencing students must obtain an appropriate First Aid Certificate within the first 4 weeks of Semester 1. Acceptable First Aid certification is:
- St John Ambulance First Aid (Level Two)
- Royal Life Saving Senior First Aid
- Metropolitan Ambulance Service First Aid (Level Two)
- Australian Red Cross First Aid (Level Two)
- Australian First Aid (Level Two).

Transferring from a full-fee place to a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP):
University of Melbourne undergraduate Australian fee-paying students automatically receive a CSP place, provided they have a cumulative H2A average over at least 100 points of the course. Note that the average is cumulative – if more than 100 points have been completed then the average is calculated using the total points completed and all the results that have been achieved in the course.
To calculate your cumulative (weighted) average, you multiply the mark you received for each subject in a year against that subject’s weighting and then add the result of each multiplication. For example, if a 1styear student received 65% for introduction to Biomedical Science (which is a 25 point subject), 70% for Oral Health Sciences 1 (which is a 37.5 point subject) and 72% for Dental Practice 1 (which is a 37.5 point subject), that student's weighted average for 1st year would be calculated as follows: 0.25x65 plus 0.375x70 plus 0.375x72 which equals 70%.
#Note: This policy does not apply to the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). Students cannot request to transfer from Fee to CSP, for this course.
Supplementary Assessment
Supplementary assessment may be offered to students who fail a component of assessment, however this is not an automatic entitlement, and the decision on whether supplementary assessment is granted is made by the Melbourne Dental School's Board of Examiners. Supplementary assessment is normally undertaken during the University's official mid-year supplementary examination periods (July), and either in December or January for end of year exams. This is to enable students who sit supplementary exams the opportunity to progress to the following year level prior to the commencement of classes in January/February of the following year. The School may also provide remedial programs to assist students in the preparation for supplementary assessment in the weeks prior to assessment.
It is important that students do not make travel plans until the official release of results in case they are required to undertake suppplementary assessment. Being interstate or overseas will not be considered a reasonable excuse for postponing supplementary assessment or missing remedial sessions.
