BDSc WITH HONOURS
In 2006, the School of Dental Science reviewed the process for awarding the degree of Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours. The method of determining the awarding of this degree will be based on results over the second, third, fourth and fifth years of the course. Students who have undertaken supplementary assessment and students who have repeated a year/s are ineligible for the BDSc with Honours. Students who receive credit for subjects completed at other tertiary institutions are also usually ineligible.
The BDSc Hons mark is the average of:
- the weighted average of all final results for 2nd year subjects, plus
- the weighted average of all final results for 3rd year subjects, plus
- the final results of the 4th year subject, plus
- the final results of the 5th year subject.
The weighted average is calculated by multiplying the mark received for each subject against that subject's weighting and then adding the result of each multiplication. For example, if a 2nd year student received 65% for Oral Health Sciences 2A (which is a 37.5 point subject), 70% for Oral Health Sciences 2B (which is a 12.5 point subject) and 72% for Dental Practice 2 (which is a 50 point subject), that student's weighted average for 2nd year would be calculated as follows: 0.375x65 plus 0.125x70 plus 0.5x72 which equals 69%.
SUBJECT CREDIT
Enrolled students with other tertiary studies may be considered for credit exemptions for subjects in the Bachelor of Dental Science or the Bachelor of Oral Health. To qualify for such exemptions the subject(s) and course(s) undertaken must be considered equivalent in content, method of instruction and assessment to those for which credit is being sought and a high academic performance attained. Both the Bachelor of Dental Science and the Bachelor of Oral Health are highly integrated courses and previous studies may not be directly comparable. Therefore, in some instances, credit may not be granted for the whole subject but for components of a subject only.

OTHER INFORMATION
Police Record Checks:
Clinical placements are part of the undergraduate courses and are undertaken at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, other metropolitan hospitals and metropolitan and rural community clinics. Most hospitals and clinical agencies require Police Record Checks for all students, staff and volunteers who will come into contact with children, elderly and vulnerable people.
All commencing students, both local and international, are required to obtain a police check at their own expense prior to enrolment. International students and students who studied outside Australia (including New Zealand) in the year prior to enrolment must obtain a police record check from the country in which they spent that year.
All continuing students must obtain a new police record check annually.
Please read the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences policy and procedures for Police Record Checks. The policy and procedures document including a Student Consent and Release form as well as a National Police Record Check application form can be downloaded as a PDF document: Policy and Procedures for Police Record Checks (PDF 2.4 MB)
