Welcome to the 2013 Melbourne Dental School Continuing Professional Development program

A Message from the Director

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 2013 Melbourne Dental School (MDS) Continuing Professional Development Program (CPD) and also to the new "e-cart" enrolment system. I hope you enjoy this new format for providing course information and enrolling in the MDS CPD courses. This exciting new system will give you much more flexibility in terms of when and how you enroll. It also allows the CPD unit to update the CPD calendar with new courses throughout the year which has not been possible in the past with a paper publication.

This year the CPD unit is pleased to announce several new programs. The first is "Achieving Predictable Ceramic Restorations". This two-day course to be held at the new Melbourne Oral Health Training Education Centre (MOHTEC); will offer practitioners the chance to use the most current materials to maximise their clinical effectiveness.

The Introductory Orthodontics program has been updated and has several speakers joining the 2013 program.  In conjunction with the Australian Society of Orthodontists the MDS is offering a new full-day Interdisciplinary Orthodontics lecture program to be held at the Bio 21 Institute.

A new half-day program in periodontics entitled “Periodontal Instrumentation: It’s How You Use It That Counts” will add to our already strong suite of periodontal courses.

We are also running a special non-scintific CPD program on the history and development of the dental profession in Victoria, c.1860 to 1950. This half day program will include a presentation in a lecture format; a guided tour of the Henry Forman Atkinson Dental Museum; and a selection of short films focusing on early dentistry, practices and treatments. Professor Henry Atkinson (100 years) will be presenting this program.

Due to the oversubscription of “Making in-house Mouthguards” during 2012, the CPD unit is now offering this half-day course again during February for those of you who may have missed out.

Once again I would like to thank the presenters for the wonderful job they do each year and for the time and effort they put into each course. Their knowledge and wealth of experience allows the CPD unit to bring you the variety of courses across all the dental disciplines.

A special thanks to all the sponsors of the MDS CPD program for their kind support of the 2013 courses.

Finally, thanks to the Melbourne Dental School staff who run the CPD programs throughout the year. In particular, Sam and Elena in the CPD Office; Mario, Sue, Elly and Daniel who provide support during the many hands-on laboratory courses. Without the hard work of these staff the program would not be possible.

We look forward to seeing you all at some stage throughout 2013!
